Hunting With My Sons

Last week I got to go hunting for pheasants and ducks with a bunch of guys, and it was an incredible day of laugher, conversation, meaningful dialogue about life and God, and just hanging out. I also got to go deer hunting with my two older sons, Shea and Trevor. My younger son, Landon, couldn’t come because of work. Now, a lot of people would think I would start talking about the game that was harvested, but that wasn’t the most significant part of either of those experiences. It was all about the relationship and the conversation. It was about getting to know one another on a deeper level.

When I was out with my sons, it was an awe-moment because once again I was struck by the fact that I could not be more proud of them. They love God, they love their wives, they love their children and they’re seeking to follow God and His plan for their lives every day.

I thank God for the influence of my wife in my children’s lives because she faithfully, before our children went to school she read scripture and prayed over them and for them. When I was in town I did it too, but she did it far more than me. That was a priority in our house for that to happen every day.

Those seeds that were planted are harvesting some incredible fruit. I thank God for the time we took to answer their questions, for how they have come to know God and how they’re moving forward with their lives because they’re putting Christ first.

I am a blessed man.

I am humbled by even what I learn from my two sons when I now ask questions of them and I just listen to what they have to say.

I had an incredible couple of days last week, and I look forward to many more this season.

Is it Indian Summer? Is it deer season?

I just like to call it God smiling before true fall and winter sets in.

Michigan in Fall

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those people who don’t like winter or snow, but I do like the variation of temperature that happens during an Indian summer and the fall. There’s a different crispness in the air. There’s a different way to look at life and that’s a biblical concept:

Psalm 118:24: This is the day the lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Whether it’s Indian summer, pouring rain or snowing, I like what WJR’s Paul W. Smith says “Greet today in a special way, because it’s a special day.”

You never know what tomorrow will hold, so appreciate today.

Surprise, guess where I went?

Monday I spent some time out in the woods. Walking fields. Sitting in a deer blind. It was great therapy.

I run at a fast pace. I like to get a lot accomplished. (another shocker, right?)

But you know what? I have to take time to be refueled, refreshed and renewed.

I do that with close friends, out in nature and with opportunities to listen and just be with God.

It was a good day.

How are you taking time to refresh during this busy season?
